Engine Room
- Cummins QSM-11M main engine 336KW (450HP) @ 2100 RPM. Engine is turbo charged, intercooled, electronic, 4 valves per cylinder, 10.8 liters displacement. Engine new September 2004, approximately 600 hours total time. All fluid changes and maintenance requirements complied with.
- 130-amp alternator with main battery bank switching.
- Two 8D main engine starting batteries for 24V system.
- Twin Disc gearbox Model 5JF-528 was installed with the new engine in Sep 2004.
- Twin Racor FX-1000 fuel filters for the main engine so that a filter can be changed with the engine running. Also a pre-filter to all engines is fitted before the individual engine Racors as well as individual engine fuel filters.
- 130 Lt (30 gal) day tank for Gensets however main engine takes fuel directly from main fuel tank.
- Two 25 KW gensets powered by Yanmar 4JH2-HTE turbocharged, intercooled 55KW (75hp) diesels at 3600 RPM. For genset use 1800 RPM is used and HP at this RPM is 38.5. One genset can power all the ships electrical systems.
- Gensets assembled and sound shield installed by Emerson Power Products of Seattle, USA. Approximate time on both gensets is 740 hours.
- The Sea chest is 20cm (8") diameter with a 15cm (6") main valve distributing seawater to main engine, gensets, fire hose and spare as required.
- A 40-gallon pressure water accumulator tank is located in the engine room next to the 40-gallon hot water tank. The accumulator tank reduces the ? HP water pump cycle time and maintains 30-50 P.S.I. water pressure throughout the vessel. A spare water pump is available. The hot water tank is 5KW and a recirculating pump is activated when hot water reaches normal temperature. This eliminates running the hot water in order to get hot water at the faucets. I have not used the hot water tank in the Caribbean, as the showers are just right at the ambient temperature.
- The electrical system is designed for genset use during meal times or approximately 3 to 4 hours per day. When the gensets are off AC power for essential systems is provided through the 7500 watt Trace inverter. This includes refrigeration, music, entertainment, computers and water pump. In the Caribbean with just a few of us onboard a genset runs for 1 hr and 30 min morning and evening which maintains the house batteries at full charge. This increases to about 6 hours per day with more people on board. For some items including essential items a genset is required. These include the anchor windlass, battery charging (135 amps) and a separate charger for the 12V batteries, which power the electronics. All wiring is tinned copper and oversized. Wiring to the winches, for example, is #4/0.
- A 40 gallon per hour water maker is installed which was manufactured by Watermakers of Florida. Unfortunately it was left too long between uses and now the Membranes need to be replaced. This will be done in Trinidad when we are there.
- The engine room has a 1.5m (45") workbench with vise and drill press. This is powered via the inverter.
- Two drawers under the workbench plus five storage shelves provide storage for a considerable number of tools and parts. Storage is also available under the aluminum checker plate engine room floor.
- The engine room has three bilge pumps, one automatic with an alarm located on the alarm panel near the galley. One manually activated 120V and one 5cm (2") powered by the fire fighting pump motor.
- The main forward and aft AC and DC electrical panel are located on the aft engine room bulkhead. These supply electrical power to the other electrical panel already mentioned previously.
- The three diesel engines are equipped with a lubricating oil pump out system to make oil changes easier.
- The house and 12V battery banks are all AGM non-venting batteries.
- 24V battery powered incandescent lighting and 120V fluorescent lighting are provided in the engine room to ensure lighting at all times.
- Two 15cm (6") diameter 600 CFM fans draw exterior air into the engine room via a plenum from the aft deck area. A 22cm (9") 600 CFM fan draws air out of the engine room. This system seems to work well and with the main engine running continuously at cruising speed engine room temp is about 15 degrees F above ambient.
- An engine room automatic/manual fire suppression system using FE-241 agent is installed on the bulkhead adjacent to the main engine. This system activated automatically at 165 degrees F or manually when the manual release is pulled. This is located near the main companionway stairs.
- The genset exhausts are wet and these were found to operate at the same noise level with or without the mufflers that were first installed. As a result the mufflers were removed and the exterior noise level is quite satisfactory. This is due to the long exhaust run to underneath the vessel transom.
- The main engine exhaust is dry until after the main muffler located in the engine room. At this point the exhaust is injected with the gearbox cooling water. Another main engine muffler is installed ? way back to underneath the transom where this exhaust also exits. This exterior exhaust noise level is also satisfactory.
- The engine room is lined with Soundown 2.5cm (1") fire retardant foam sandwiched with a 1-lb/square foot lead substitute. Although this helps to reduce main engine room noise I wish the main engine were quieter. It is however quiet when sailing.
- Hand held dry chemical and foam fire extinguishers are located just inside the engine room door.
- A Buell 24V tank mounted compressor powers the two Buell air horns, 15" and 18" in length. These horns are mounted on top of the deckhouse.
- A 'Zinc Saver' galvanic isolator is installed. I don't know if this works but the zincs on the hull are still in good shape after two years.
Deckhouse
- A 102x122cm (40x48") chart table is provided with three drawers that can accommodate most full sized charts without folding.
- A Deckhouse circuit breaker panel protects the Furuno GPS Navigator, the JRC depth sounder/fish finder, the ICOM, IC-M4025 with DSC, ICOM-M600 SSB, Sony stereo, Captains cabin ICOM VHF and the KVH Tracphone satellite phone.
- A trace inverter control panel is also installed in the deckhouse with is a duplicate of the panel found on the inverter in the engine room.
- An 18cm (7") clock and barometer set are located on the forward deckhouse wall.
- A MiniQ, Pentium 4 computer used for ship's navigation, weather and emails is to the left of the chart table. A 17" LCD monitor is used with this computer and a Cannon i550 printer is available to print weather maps, etc. A chair that swivels is also available for computer use.
- A KVH Tracphone handset is located here for sat phone use. The satellite tracking antenna is located outboard of the main antenna platform on the stern pulpit.
- The deckhouse has 9 large windows as well as one small window facing aft. Three storm covers are provided for these large windows if required.
- A 145x225cm (57x89") berth or sitting area is located on the starboard side of the deckhouse and is fitted with a ready light. This area is useful along with the sofa to starboard as a talking/coffee area when the weather is poor due to the good visibility through the deckhouse windows.
- Three enclosed shelves totaling 3.3m (11') of shelf space hold marine books and the vessels manuals.
- Forward of the books is the Panasonic phone system electronics and distribution center.
- Three fire extinguishers.
- A Sony stereo, AM-FM CD player with a remote control and four speakers under the seating on the aft deck is located just inside the deckhouse entrance.
- The port side sofa is 204cm (8') long, seats three people and can be used as a berth if required.
- Two 120V duplex outlets are provided. One generator powered and one inverter powered.
- One thermostatically controlled 240V electric heater.
- A large ventilated hanging wet locker with a fiberglass floor is located near the aft deckhouse bulkhead.
- Country flags, about 50 and signal flags, 40, are located in storage areas on the port and starboard aft sides of the deckhouse.
- Flares, safety harnesses and other safety gear are located under the sofa.
- An ACR Electronics EPIRB, which was new in Sep 2004, is fastened to the stairwell wall leading into the vessel.
- An exterior light panel is located her and duplicated at the steering station.
- Three adjustable, dimmable Halogen lights are located over the chart table. Thirteen others are located in the deckhouse deckhead. Some of these are controlled via three-way switching so that they can be turned off after entering the main saloon.
- A smoke detector.
